Marketing Tip for Fall - 5 Minutes A Day!

I absolutely love the threshold from summer to fall. It is this potent time to shift our energy a bit more internally away from the bustling energy of summer to the grounding energy of fall.

My marketing tip for Fall --- Tend to your business goals each week. Even if all you have is 5 minutes. A little bit goes a long way.

What is your purpose?

This past week I've struggled as I know most of us have - my body aches, my emotions are up and down, my self care is all over the place and yet I have found moments of peace, clarity and a bit more balance. Through this process I've also re-connected even stronger back to my purpose. The reason why I'm doing the work I do in the world. And what keeps me going.

Our yoga practice can also teach us to see - to identify where we are closing down, numbing out or engaging in a lot of heat when life throws us a curve ball. Also, it can illuminate where we are not allowing our process and emotions to be present. For me, the lesson that I am learning is to be patient with myself.

After last week's election and a week long silent meditation and yoga retreat at Spirit Rock my eyes are more open to the subtle and not so subtle ways I process, and also what triggers me. Interestingly enough my triggers are also related to my purpose. The things that light me up are also the very things I am working to help others heal inside of themselves. This is common, especially among those of us that work to give back to community.

One way to help us connect back in to the world and to each other is purpose. When I meet with clients I always try to emphasize that they go back to their "why" when thinking about marketing.

Why are you doing what you do in the world?

This practice always helps me when my head is spinning, or if I'm caught in self judgment. It also helps when I can't quite find the words or strength to hold the space.

Put Purpose Into Action:

  1. Write down your purpose on a sticky note, or in a place where you can see if often. When you are struggling, having a bad day or feeling uninspired look at the note. It will ground you, I promise.

  2. Connect everything you do to your why. So every class you teach, email you send, social media post or video you share comes back to your mission.

  3. Don't make it more complicated than it is!

Your Intuition + Marketing

I've often struggled finding ease and balance with marketing. As an entrepreneur it can feel like you have to either work non stop or have a small army to make any kind of meaningful impact.

I believe in a different way to go about it all. Something that was not exactly taught to me in school, or in my time doing marketing at larger corporations or even in small business.

Trust in your intuition - that gut feeling you have about something whether that is NOT wanting to send another generic email campaign on a Tuesday morning, OR creating some clever post on social media that doesn't feel authentic.

And, I've found that the more "innocent" I can be the easier it is to have clarity and connect to my intuition to make decisions - in life and business. Often times innocence can be confused with being naive. In fact they are quite different. What I mean by innocence is the ability to see a situation clearly - without being clouded by preconceived thought. That is not always easy. If you think about a child exploring nature, or the last time you tried something with a true beginner's mind - you were open to the experience and welcomed it fully. All of it.

I believe using our intuition to drive our decisions is much more powerful and real than any marketing formula.

We are able to see clearly when we wipe the fog from the mirror.

Put It Into Action:

  1. Think of one marketing channel you'd like to explore, or something that has been looming in your mind. For instance, this could be starting an Instagram page or beginning an email marketing strategy.

  2. Next ask yourself, what is the purpose of this platform. Literally - what is the main activity people do or use it for? Is it sharing and viewing photos and videos or learning in more detail? Try to see the marketing channel from a place of innocence - not judgment, especially if you are conflicted. Get very specific and clear.

  3. Then ask yourself, "what do I think would actually be interesting to see on XYZ?" (note: it can be helpful to view this from your perspective as a student - not the teacher, marketer, business owner, etc.)

  4. Take what you've just learned into consideration and ask yourself what you immediately feel that YOU want to do on that platform. What do you think will resonate, and what would YOU like to see if you were the student? Often times the first thing that we think comes from a place of truth if we stay in the framework of being innocent and inquisitive.

  5. BONUS TIP: While I think it can be helpful to see what other teachers are doing as a way to generate ideas and inspiration for what you might be able to do...be cautious as it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and think you don't have what it takes, or enough time, etc.

I'm eager to hear if this was helpful - let me know.
